The movie Erin Brockovich is a true story about how irresponsible people can be when it comes to water pollution. The part of Erin in the movie is played by Julia Roberts and she does a wonderful job of showing how unexpected people can discover unexpected and disturbing things. In Erin Brockovich, a town was being polluted by Chromium Six, they were told that it was a healthier and unharmful kind of chromium when in reality it was causing hundreds of medical issues for any of the residents in the area who were using this polluted water. In 1993 Erin Brockovich was able to somehow get a job with a legal firm despite her lack of education and career success in her past. Once she became comfortable with her job, Erin started to become curious about Hinkley, California and after she did some deeper research she started to discover some patters in the conditions of the residents in Hinkley. In addition to the extreme medical issues these people were dealing with, Erin Brockovich also starts to make questions for herself. PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) was a company that handled their harmful products irresponsibly and then continued to lie to the people that they would soon be hurting. Basically, through out the movie, Erin starts to find things out about PG&E that makes her assume that they are trying to hide something, that maybe their company is the cause of the very medical issues the Hinkley residents are dealing with. The effects that Hexavalent Chromium 6 was having on people was outrageous. Medical complications varied from Lung cancer, irritation in the stomach and intestines, damage of nose, throat, and lungs, and dermatitis. On top of all of this, the effects of chromium 6 can be passed down to the offspring of those who were exposed. As the movie progresses, Erin finally finds all the evidence and proof that she needs to take PG&E to court. Although she was uneducated and not a lawyer, her research was enough for her to win a huge case that no one thought she could ever take on. After the court case each victim received about $300,000! However, some did get less around $50,000 where as others received more, as high as millions. The amount of money that PG&E had to pay to the Hinkley residents were distributed differently for each person depending on the severity of their medical issues and the amount of exposure they had to the chromium six. Overall Erin Brockovich is an extraordinary woman with the determination and heart that many people dream of. She gave hinkley residents the justice they deserved and she saved many lives. Now the people in this small California town are able to let their kids swim in their pools and take baths in their own homes without worry of such illegal and horrible pollution.
